Been looking for some of these to see what it's being done and where we can improve ;-)

  • The MapTool looks interesting. DiceTool sucks, too many buttons, all you need is a textbox with autocomplete and a big bright "roll" button. InitTool could use a better UI, but looks good from the screenshot.
  • This one seems interesting, as it tries to tackle most of what I understand RDie aims to do, although for D&D only.

I know that there was at least one more that I found once (it used google maps with custom tiles to display the campaign maps, which is how I found it in the first place). But I can't find it on google and it seems I didn't add it to my :-/

Anyway, add any others that you know of :)

    Well, I don't know much about online systems for gaming as of yet, but I did find some forums where people game. Here's a large one:

    Also, a downloaded tool that we might want to integrate some functionality of at some point... this seems to give you a library of RPG-related sounds that you can cue during a game. I'm sure we could integreate this kind, or any kind, of media into our games as scripts - distribute them as media packs with Systems (containing sounds, tiles for the maps, whatnot)... systems can reference them in the front-end control system:

    Regarding EpicTable... it looks horribly, horribly, horribly done. In any case, even if they do produce a product better than their 'preview' website...

    • The 'map' will probably be in flash, and I plan to do ours entirely in SVG and javascript. By the time RDie is truly ready for public consumption, browsers will have much more consistent support for SVG than they do currently - and I really have no intention of supporting internet explorer, ever. Current versions of Safari, Opera, and FireFox all have at least paltry support for SVG rendering, and edge versions (which I develop off of) are actually coming along as true SVG renderers (although most still screw lots of things up).
    • It will be closed-source
    • It will be limited to D&D
    • It won't run the game for the DM
    • There will be no way to extend it with house rules, if it DOES run the game for you
    • I'm not sure from the website, but it may be paid, or at least strewn with ads

    And even if none of these were the case, that is no reason to not continue with what we're working on - competition is a good thing, especially from a paid product (if you are working on an open-source one).

    I have yet to download the demo (gah! commercial product alert!) and try it.

    And no, I never said competition wasn't good. It gives us a stick to measure against and see how we are better in all respects ;-)
